Common Jellyfish - Aurelia aurita

Common Jellyfish - Aurelia aurita

Common Jellyfish, Aurelia aurita, start life attached to rocks and algae in quite shallow water. At this stage they look like very tiny, delicate anemones and are called scyphistoma. They seem to prefer darker places such as overhangs and the roofs of caves where they can exist in huge numbers. Small larvae bud off from these and drift along eventually becoming full sized common jellyfish.
